Okay, I'm just kidding . . . actually I have a friend with a
beautiful little Maltese named "Lois Pearl" who uses Wee Wee pads and
it works out just fine (except when little Lois misses and hits the
floor, oops!)
What I've been told, time and time again, by many
dog trainers - is that once you train your dog to go potty on Wee Wee
pads, expect that you might be married to that routine for the rest of
your dog's life. For folks who think they may one day be able to live
in a house with a backyard (oh, its good to dream, isn't it?) . . . you
are going to be kicking yourself if your dog is confused by the removal
of the Wee Wee pad and starts looking for an indoor potty place.
Another downside to training your dog on
wee wee pads (or newspapers) is that you are teaching them that it is appropriate to go
potty on a flat indoor surface that can be confused for the floor. They may mistake
carpeting or throw rugs with an acceptable potty place. This can turn
out to be especially embarassing if you ever want to travel with your
dog or be a guest in the homes of others.
If
you are going to go with the Wee Wee pad as your dog's place to go
potty - to save money, I know many people who have recommended using adult under pads (usually available in medical supply stores) - they are generally the same thing only not as expensive.
Also,
here is a great product that holds down your Wee Wee pad in place (so
it doesn't move around as your dog walks on it). Check out Wiz Dog Their website says you can use substitute newspapers as well.
I would advise discussing your potty strategy with a professional
dog trainer, even before you bring your new puppy home. Having a
plan in place is always the best way to go, even if you are going to
use wee wee pads.
Warning: This product has been known to cause wagging tails!
